Umphrey's McGee at First Avenue
Minneapolis received an absolute musical treat as Chicago-based jam band Umphrey’s McGee stopped at First Avenue this week. The group has made it a habit to swing by Minneapolis – and committed to a two-night stay this year – and it’s easy to see why. Thursday night's crowd showed ample support for the band, touring in support of their latest album, Death By Stereo, and coaxed them into an encore with chants of “We want the Umph! Gotta have that Umph!,” shouted to the tune of George Clinton’s 1976 classic.
And while the night contained a heavy dose of Umphrey’s material, there were some nods to bands whose music they’ve been influenced by. The band covered Pink Floyd’s, “Another Brick In The Wall” and dedicated an entire post-show appearance at the 7th Street Entry to hits from Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, and Led Zeppelin before closing with the Talking Heads’ “Making Flippy Floppy” and “Burning Down The House.” Attended by just 250 people, the extra set provided a unique experience for any Umphrey’s fan as the group exchanged dialogue amongst themselves as well as the jumping and screaming crowd. But even those who didn’t make it into this intimate affair likely walked away satisfied. Minneapolis really does want the Umph.
