Zumbro is a hit with Linden Hills residents, but upscale comfort foods such as turkey meatloaf are worth the trip even if you don't live nearby. It's a cheerful, bright and kid-friendly spot for breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch.

Zumbro, the airy bistro in Linden Hills bedecked from floor to ceiling in tasteful blond birch, seems to grow organically out of the  picturesque neighborhood. The charming little community with the requisite baker, butcher, bookstore and ice cream shop just wouldn’t seem right without it. Neighbors and tourists clearly agree, as a seat in here is also tough to come by during peak brunch time, but greetings from the door come instantly and as friendly as family. Servers are swift, and the plates are tasteful and exact, like something out of a Martha Stewart magazine, only less pretentious.

Benedicts come with hollandaise that’s light—if a hollandaise can be such a thing—and lemony. Toast is sourdough or multigrain, flash-grilled with butter, and frittatas are a yellow disk of beauty, with premium ingredients such as portabella mushrooms, applewood-smoked bacon and chèvre. Plated with rustic-cut roasted potatoes and green stalks of asparagus, it’s all almost perfect.
