Yay, Gay!

The 39th annual Twin Cities Pride festival celebrates the cities’ diversity, inspires equality and challenges discrimination. Here's what's happening when.

If you were gay, well, that’d be more than just OK. Unless you’ve been living under a rock or some other isolated cranny, then you’re aware that Minneapolis was named the gayest city by Advocate earlier this year. Bottom line: The pressure is on.

More than 125,000 people of various sexual orientations watched the Twin Cities Pride parade last year. This year—beginning at 11 a.m. or 9 a.m. for the pre-show—you can probably expect the same, if not more. The (tentative) lineup includes proud sponsors and exhibitionists like Dykes on Bikes and Mayhem Rugby Football Club. Like any good parade, there will be some worthwhile loot to go with the spectacle. Also, scattered through Loring Park all weekend will be nearly 400 vendors and exhibitors selling food, merchandise or simply giving away freebies. You can always stop by Smitten Kitten and Rainbow Road for some naughty goodies.

It being Pride weekend in Minneapolis and all—you can bet your bottom dollar there’s a handful of shows to be seen. For starters, there’s Pride in Concert with Debbie Gibson headlining, along with local favorites like God-des, Kaci Battaglia, Boogie Wonderland and Lili’s Burlesque. A ticket is $10 (or $15 at the door)—it just doesn’t get much better than that.

...Or maybe it does, depending on who you are and what your prefer. Queertopia rounds up local queer artists for a night of performance that’ll make you proud, if you weren’t already.  The show goes all weekend long and is only $10 (or $12 at the door). Again, what else can you ask for?

OK, one more: Patrick’s Cabaret always has a little somethin’ somethin’ going on.

You’ll be able to squeeze in a workout this weekend while still partaking in the festivities by signing up for the Rainbow Run 5k. The route follows the parade path, in which you will so conveniently run past thousands of spectators and just in time to catch the beginning of the parade.

The Loring Park/downtown Minneapolis area is known for its pride heritage. Since you’re in the ‘hood, why not patronize local watering holes like the 19 Bar, 7 days of Pride at Saloon, Eagle Bolt Bar, Gay 90’s, Jetset Bar and The Brass Rail Lounge. For those looking elsewhere in the cities, try Lush Food Bar, The Town House Bar, Camp Bar or Kitty Cat Klub.

If after all of this you’re sill achin’ for more events and activities, peruse through Lavender magazine.
