Dance Like Everyone’s WatchingIn a city that oozes creativity it can be hard to know if your entertainment-of-choice will be a walk-out worthy flop or an inspiring tour de force.
Most of the time, it’s up to the event-goer to simply take a chance.
Organizers of the Walker Art Center’s new performing arts season are taking a bit of the mystery out of the equation.
On Thursday, senior performing arts curator Philip Bither will provide a preview of the more than 20 dance, theater and music shows that make up the Walker Art Center's performing arts season.
Held in the Balcony Bar of the McGuire Theater, the event will also allow attendees to meet and talk to the performing arts staff and artists about the upcoming season and to see a multi-media presentation in which the artists speak about their upcoming performances.
Some guidance may be needed, too.
This season features a roster of shows that could compel arts fans to reach for their Visas, including a performance by the angelic-sounding St. Vincent and a choreographed evening of dance from Bill Jones.
The Walker’s annual Out There festival – now nearly a quarter-century old – also returns in January with performances from New York, Tokyo, Beirut and Buenos Aires (including one all-nude performance that examines gender).
The choice is yours, but not without a little help from your friends.
The free preview event will be held Thursday, Sept. 15 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the McGuire Theater, and bookended with two happy hours—one from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the other 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. A full schedule is also available on the Walker Art Center's website here.
