Minneapolis: Hipster, Gay and Proud of It

Advocate and Buzzfeed have crowned our fair city the gayest and the "most hipster" in the nation.

It’s official: Minnesota is the most “hipster” state in the nation--according to Buzzfeed. Though the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn is typically thought of as the epicenter of the hipster genus, the great state of Minnesota has eclipsed New York and become No. 1 in searches for the term. Buzzfeed cites several reasons for us earning this title, including our penchant for the “lumberjack look”; abundance of live theater, co-ops and farmers markets; bike obsession; avant-garde musicians (Bob Dylan, Prince, Atmosphere, Soul Asylum, Hüsker Dü ); and the movie Juno. Trailing Minnesota in hipsterness are New York, Oregon, Massachusetts and Illinois.

Minneapolis was also named the gayest city in the nation by Advocate recently, leading The Daily Show to crown our metropolitan area as “the new gay” (warning: video is NSFW). That should make June's Pride festival even more fun than usual.
