Designer/firm: Rita Larson, Allied Member ASID, Larson Design/Build Inc.

About the designer: After 20 years of working in construction, Jeff Larson was ready to start his own business. We remodeled our own home together while Rita completed her interior design degree. Since then we’ve been working with homeowners and commercial clients to bring out the best in their living and work spaces.
We love getting to know each client personally. In fact, some of our clients joke that it feels like we move in with them. We work on one project at a time, and you can count on us to be there every day until your job is completed. Jeff is a Licensed Minnesota Contractor with more than 25 years of construction experience. Rita’s licensing is with the American Society of Interior Designers (Allied ASID, Green AP).

The quick-and-dirty: Designer Keri Olson hired herself to remodel her kitchen and the adjacent powder room. By relocating major appliances, ditching the previous white cabinetry for three darker finishes and creating display space for her impressive art and Mexican pottery collections, Olson created a roomy yet intimate space.
See it for yourself: 3854 Bridgewater Dr., Eagan
Designer/firm: Keri Olson, Allied Member ASID, KOR Interior Design

About the designer:
DESIGN APPROACH: My approach is client centered, collaborative and collected. I spend time getting to know each client and what they want to accomplish. The key is listening throughout the project. Initially we will establish the scope of the project, whether it is a bathroom/kitchen remodel or furnishings for your home and then define what will make this project a success. We’ll create a list of needs, wants and desires by exploring what has worked for you, what doesn’t work, where you are today in your life and anticipating your future as well. Then, we will develop the design through initial sketches, layouts and materials. After fine tuning to meet your objectives, you will have a clear picture of the cost and time-frame for implementation. From there, KOR Interior Design will coordinate all ordering, services, trades people and artisans necessary to complete your project and manage it through final installation.
INFLUENCE AND INSPIRATION: Living and working abroad has had an enormous influence on my view of design, and an appreciation for the comforts of all homes. In South Africa I was immersed in a western European aesthetic with the influences of colonial and traditional Africa. Mexico exposed me to the Spanish colonial flavor along with Latin and indigenous style. My travels to Europe provide endless design inspiration. The result is that I see beauty from a broad view. I strive to bring something extra to each project that reflects the homeowner in the world, a design that is more collected than created. I love to integrate today’s living spaces with old and new treasures. The end result is a place that is personal, beautiful and timeless, regardless of style.
I find inspiration everywhere. I am often inspired by a home’s architecture. It may be powerful, like the work of Cass Gilbert or subtle, such as a clean lined fireplace. The dreams and desires of my clients are always inspiring. They sense the need for something new and different in their home. When they involve me in their project, their motivations become mine. It’s exciting to create a beautiful space that exactly meets the mark.

The quick-and-dirty: A masterful master bath with Crema Marfil floor tiles, whirlpool tub, chandelier and glass steam shower.
See it for yourself: 4945 Emerson Ave. S., Mpls.
Designer/firm: Renae Keller, ASID, Renae Keller Interior Design, Inc.

About the designer: After graduating from Mankato State University in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, I began my career in Minneapolis as a design associate at an elite interior design firm. Six years later I became an independent designer with the company, where I remained for three more years before joining another reputable interior design firm in 2005. I received my ASID certification in 2006, and in January 2010, I left my position as independent interior designer to launch my own interior design business, Renae Keller Interior Design, Inc.
Inspired daily by the art of balancing subtle elegance with day-to-day practicality, Renae Keller Interior Design, Inc., is a full-service interior design studio in the Twin Cities area known for our attention to detail and fresh approach to creating beautiful spaces. The philosophy that fueled me years ago is still at the heart of my designing style: burn the candles, use the china. I firmly believe in enjoying the beauty that is created around you, whether it's the allure of the warmth emanating from the pillar candles or the childhood memories triggered by the gold-rimmed china plates at Christmastime. Those are the details that I create with my clients to make their house their home.
Design is an evolutionary process. I begin each project with an open dialogue with my clients to understand how they want a room to feel and how, in turn, they want to feel in their space. I am not tied to any one design style; rather, I collaborate with my clients to paint their story and make their space come alive. I work toward a collective feel, all the while designing a space that is both comfortable and candid.

EVERYTHING AND THE KITCHEN SINK

The quick-and-dirty: Two bathrooms (one for the kids, one master bath with soaking tub and glass steam shower for mom and dad) + kitchen with warm wood cabinetry (our favorite part: the built-in wine rack) = three reasons to never leave home.
See it for yourself: 1800 Goodrich Ave, St. Paul, MN 55105
Designers/firm: Lisa Peck, ASID & Emily Anderson, Allied Member ASID; Lilu Interiors, Inc.

About the designers:
Lisa Peck (at left): You know how Bobby Fischer was a chess phenom at age 13? That kind of describes Lisa. Not the chess phenom part so much as exhibiting natural talent for something at a young age. When most kids struggled to match their socks, Lisa played a matching game with her mother that developed her remarkable memory for color. And when most kids griped about cleaning their bedrooms, Lisa used it as an excuse to redecorate. An interior design career was calling.
During her 20 years in the industry, Lisa has collaborated with a host of people on a variety of projects that span the gamut of style. She is an expert at working within three-dimensional space, identifying hard materials and mixing them with textures and patterns. Her mastery of color has earned her the nickname “Color Queen” around the office. And while there’s no idea too big or detail too small, Lisa understands the importance of protecting her clients from spending time and money on frivolous extras.
Perhaps more importantly Lisa has developed lasting relationships with clients and trade professionals along the way. And she has done so in large part because her pull-no-punches approach and inspired designs knock your socks off.
Emily Anderson (at right): People often ask Emily if her hair is naturally curly. But they never seem to question her unique combinations of materials, fabrics and finishes. And the color palettes she blends together never miss the mark.
That’s because she is so meticulous about design. On a to-do list the length of a small child’s arm, she tracks every client request that needs to be considered and task that needs to be completed. One time as a joke we hid her list. But she must have had a spare because she just laughed and soon had an even longer list in hand. She’s always prepared for the unexpected. Not to mention amazingly tolerant of bad practical jokes.
Emily’s easy-going demeanor is just one reason why clients enjoy working with her so much. They also appreciate her creative design solutions and commitment to delivering on her promises.
By the way, it is naturally curly.

Designers/firm: Michael Crull Allied Member ASID, David Heide, Allied Member ASID; David Heide Design Studio

About the designers:
David Heide (at left): Architectural history has been a passion of David's since long before his career began. With an emphasis on architectural and interior design history, he received a bachelor of architecture degree from Drake University after studying classical languages at Macalester College. He performed post graduate studies at the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. This extensive educational background has provided David with thorough knowledge of late 19th and early 20th century decorative arts, furnishings, finishes, and design.
A strong believer in the benefits that good design brings to a community, David has always worked to preserve the design integrity of the city in which he lives. He served for five years on the Saint Paul Heritage Preservation Commission and chaired its design review committee for three years. He founded Saint Paul’s Grand Avenue Design Guidelines Task Force, prompting the mayor to name him to the Neighborhood Honor Roll in 1996. David recently was appointed to the Governor’s Residence Council and, until recently, served on the board of Historic Saint Paul.
Concurrent with his education and public service, David worked for ten years on historic preservation projects for MacDonald & Mack Architects in Minneapolis. He departed in 1997 to found David Heide Design Studio, through which he carries out his interest and expertise in, and commitment to, preserving and restoring historic resources.
Michael Crull (at right): Educated in interior design at the University of Wisconsin, Michael worked as a visual merchandising and marketing specialist for two major retailers before joining our Studio. His broad knowledge of interior design, textiles, furniture, color, and finishes informs much of our portfolio. Drawing on a large network of resource contacts, Michael regularly locates unique and hard-to-find items such as art-glass lamps, antique and one-of-a-kind furniture pieces, and specific pieces of architectural salvage. Items are hand picked to unify projects as well as meet the budgetary and aesthetic needs of clients.

Designer/firm: Kristen Sheikh, ASID, Bruit de la Mode, Inc.

About the designer: When asked the meaning of her unusually named Interior Design firm Bruit de la Mode, Inc., Kristen Sheikh gives a sly smile. “It’s slang that translates from French to ‘the gossip of fashion’, which pretty much encapsulates my world” she says. To Kristen, the gossip of fashion means the collaboration, the variety, and the inspiration of what makes the world interesting, beautiful and unique– via clothing, art or interior design.
Raised in the Twin Cities, Kristen Sheikh has always been passionate about great design. Showing great interest and aptitude for fashion and art beginning in her teens, she followed her passion earning a degree in Textile and Clothing with a minor in Art History at the University of Minnesota. Her education led her to the center of the fashion industry, New York City where she was first influenced by the minimalist, refined aesthetic of Calvin Klein, while working alongside the menswear design team. From Calvin Klein she moved on to Prada, entering into one of the most influential design houses in the world. It was at Prada where Kristen learned the art of elegance by mixing prints, textures and thematic inspiration.
After marrying, newlywed Kristen and her husband moved to Washington, D.C. where her husband was pursuing a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering. Still driven by‘the gossip of fashion’, Kristen decided to become a student again as well, enrolling in Marymount University to study Interior Design. While working her way through school, Kristen secured a position at DBI Architects, a leading architectural firm
In Washington, D.C. specializing in corporate and government buildings and interiors. She was a team member on several high profile projects such as The International Monetary Fund, World Bank, The Department of Energy Building and the Securities and Exchange Commission Headquarters. Her experience at DBI Architects was essential, giving her valuable training in design project management, and the confidence to strike out on her own. Post graduation, Kristen opened Bruit de la Mode, Inc., specializing in residential and commercial interior design.
Recently expanding her design company from Washington, D.C. to Minneapolis / St. Paul, MN, Kristen is creating beautiful spaces for her clients with her design aesthetic that is fresh, innovative and elegant. It is paramount to her that the client's daily functionality needs of a space are met in every design she does.
