A major side effect of having one of the best biking scenes in the country is the sudden surplus of bike shops. How are you supposed to decide which bike shop is right for you when there are five within biking distance? Well, you shouldn’t. Here’s a list of the best bike shops in Minneapolis, St. Paul and even a few in the ‘burbs. Now, go out and buy that bike you’ve always wanted. You know you miss the open road.

Minneapolis

Our Pick: One on One Bicycle Studio

This place can’t be beat on three fronts. First, it has a café that is quaint and inviting, a nice bonus that will keep you coming back on non-bike related adventures. The repair shop is reasonably priced, which is always an added bonus. And best of all, it has one of the biggest bike junkyards you’ll ever come across. If you’re looking for some Shimano 600 brake levers, you’ll probably find them here.

Tune-Ups and Service: No set price, $1/minute, as fast as they can get it done

Best Tweets: adakatarina@metromag I love One on One based solely on their soups, bread and coffee!

@metromag 1on1 & the hub! 1on1 for the junkyard and gallery-feel to the place. Hub for the overall helpfulness.

The Best of the Rest:
Behind Bars

The Northeast is full of bikers (aka Hipsters). So, you’d expect there to be at least one great bike shop. This is the place. They mostly deal in new bikes; so, don’t expect a whole heck of a lot of used merchandise. Not quite on par with One-on-One (a hard task, when looking at their massive North Loop space), but its the best bike shop north of the river.

Tune-Ups and Service: $35 - 150

208 13th Ave. N.E., Mpls.
612.436.0255

The Hub
and Varsity Bike Shops

Both of these serve the U. With that, you would think that the quality of bikes would go down. Not the case, both have great service and experienced staffs. In this case, it’s a toss up. You should choose whichever store is more convenient for you.

Tune-Ups and Service: The Hub: $60 - 205 Varsity: $40 - 95

Varsity Bike and Transit
1316 S.E. 4th St., Mpls.

The Hub Bicycle Co-op
West Bank
301 Cedar Ave. S., Mpls.

Midtown

3020 Minnehaha Ave. S., Mpls.

Freewheel

Each location serves different purposes. The West Bank location has a huge selection of new bikes. The new Midtown Greenway location lends itself to repairs and commuter services. Few bikes are sold at the greenway location, though there is a large selection of fairly priced accessories, a coffee shop and showers. Our twitter fans seem to be in two camps: love or hate.

Tune-Ups and Service: $70 - 150

Best Tweets: faeryguinevere@metromag I love the Freewheel on the Greenway. Fast, polite and reasonably-priced. I just had a repair done there and they were wonderful!

@metromag …I don't trust Freewheel anymore.

Sunrise Cyclery

This place may not be pretty, but that never stopped One-on-One’s basement either. This little gem has very reasonable prices for bikes and service. They deal almost completely in used bikes, though they have a great selection of Surly bikes. If you’re looking for that bike you road 20 or 30 years ago, you should probably check out Sunrise. Shop owner Jamie McDonald also happens to build some of the best wheels in town and spends the rest of his time as the chief mechanic for the Twin Cities Bicycling Club.

Tune-Ups and Service: $50; True Wheel: $5 - 10 per wheel

901 W. Lake St., Mpls.

St. Paul

Our Pick: Capital Deals

A bit off the beaten path, Capital Deals is part secondhand store / part bike shop. The prices can’t be beat if you’re looking for an old bike that has been reworked and given a topnotch tune-up. They also have what is possibly that best selection of grip tape in the cities. Plus, if you don’t find the bike your looking for, you can pick up other sweet finds like old Nintendo games and speakers. How can you beat that?

Tune-Ups and Service: $45

710 Smith Ave., St. Paul
651.222.8380

The Best of the Rest: Grand Performance

This little shop on Grand Avenue in St. Paul deals mostly in race bikes, but don’t let this keep you away from the shop. Service price is comparable to the other shops around the cities. In the end, if you’re in the east metro and you want the best new road bike anywhere, you should stop by Grand Performance.

Tune-Ups and Service: $75; Complete Overhaul $300

Best Tweet: BetsyPavlica@metromag Grand Performance at Grand & Prior in St. Paul - awesome racing bike shop

1938 Grand Ave., St. Paul
651.699.2640

The ‘Burbs

Boehm’s (Mendota Heights, St. Paul)
The Bikery (Stillwater)
Tonka Cycle (Minnetonka)
Sports Hut (Wayzata)
