Cute outfit!
Thanks. I like this one a lot.

Where’d you get it?
I bought the pants from this boutique in New York called Seven. They’re by a French label called April 77. And I got the polka-dot shirt at Unique Thrift in New Hope. I bought them separately and was looking at them one day and was like “This works!” The top was this women’s blouse from the ‘80s. I just cut off the ruffley sleeves to give it a more masculine edge. The Chanel necklace was a gift from a friend of mine, and the boots are by Jean-Michel Cazabat, a French designer.

You have such a slender frame. Is it hard to find clothes that fit?
It is. I don’t buy a lot of my stuff locally, especially my pants. I usually just order from boutiques on the east coast and websites like revolveclothing.com. I tend to gender blend a bit.

Where do you shop locally?
I go to Len Druskin. Sometimes their buyers get these labels you’ll find at cool boutiques outside the city, and it’s kind of fun because people here don’t know about it, and it’ll go on clearance right away. So I’m getting these sweet deals on these awesome labels that my friends pay full price for in New York. Most of what I buy is online, but I get accessories and stuff at Unique Thrift and Arc’s Value Village.

Do you follow the national fashion scene?
I like street style blogs. A buddy of mine, Ari Seth Cohen, has this blog called Advanced Style. He features mature men and women over 50, these eccentric people who’ve been doing their own thing forever. It’s a cool take on the street style blog that’s so in vogue right now.

What do you do for a living?
I work as a supervisor at a natural foods co-op. I’m also a photographer. My stuff’s been getting noticed a lot lately. I got published in a few publications last year.

Did you go to school here?
I went to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design for photography. I also studied at Parson’s School of Design in Paris for a little bit, but I graduated in Minneapolis.

So you lived in Paris for a while?
I did. It was such a good experience.

I bet that influenced your style.
Definitely. I tried to sneak into a Balenciaga show with a friend of mine, and of course failed miserably. I was thinking that maybe if I had my camera with me they would let me in, but no. At least we got to hang out outside and see all the fun people.

Did you grow up here?
I grew up in Minneapolis and Minnetonka.

Where do you hang out?
I went to this new cool place called Honey a while go. It’s below Ginger Hop. I went there one night—they were playing some cool music—and it was really low-key and fun. The 19 Bar over by Loring Park is fun. They have Grace Jones on the jukebox; she’s one of my favorite people.

What are your fashion don’ts?
I cannot stand flip-flops. Especially when you go out, you know, to the Monte Carlo, and see someone dressed up, and then look down and gasp because they’re wearing flip-flops. That, and white socks. I can’t stand white socks.

Any trends you’re particularly excited about?
I’m getting into really cool knitwear. I just found this oversized handmade knit top; it looks like it could be something from Bernhard Wilhelm, but it’s not. I just love playing with proportions—you know, skinny pants with oversized tops and things like that.

What’s your take on the Twin Cities fashion scene?
I think it’s a work in progress. Each year it seems like it’s expanding and progressing. There’s this boutique based here called ShopFatal.com. They carry coveted up-and-coming designers like Bernard Wilhelm and Daniel Palillo—he’s one of my new favorite designers. It’s cool that the shop is based here in Minneapolis. We have world-class art galleries and museums. It only makes sense that there’s a decent fashion scene, too.
