Summer Hair Care Remedies

Your fun in the summer sun – swimming in the pool, lake (or ocean if you're lucky), sunbathing and just being outdoors – likely has done a number on your hair. Depending on your hair type, it may look dull, dry, split, brittle or frizzy. But don’t stress, we talked to hair stylist and the director of Juut Salonspa, Woody Theis for suggestions on how to tame your mane so you can love your hair again.

Home care is your best bet if you don’t want to take the time or expense to be in the salon. Boost moisture and condition your hair with a touch of olive oil or virgin coconut oil. Apply to dry hair and brush thoroughly before rubbing in the oil. It doesn’t need to be dripping (about a quarter cup would probably do it). You want to make sure you work it in so that the hair saturates. Let it soak for as long as you have – Woody says as many as four hours will do wonders – then wash your hair like normal. The all natural treatment is not only good for the hair, but your scalp and skin too.

If strength is what your hair is lacking you can give it an extra dose of protein from something that’s likely in your refrigerator already – an egg. Eggs are packed with protein and provide additional cleansing properties. Simply scramble an egg into a bowl and put it on wet hair, apply it like shampoo and leave it in for about 20 minutes, then wash normally. Drinking lots of water and eating foods with good quality animal protein and vegetable protein will help from the inside out too.

Salon care is obviously a great alternative if you want to avoid the legwork at home. Many salons offer add-on services that are damage remedy treatments. Like home remedies, salon treatments can improve moisture and strength. Consult with your stylist to determine what treatment is better for your hair. Treatments take about 15 minutes and cost around $25. Juut Salonspas in downtown Minneapolis and Southdale additionally offer a more powerful detoxifying treatment that is ideal for breaking down really damaged hair from chlorine buildup. How long the treatment will last depends on your hair type; the finer and lighter your hair is, the shorter it will last.

Hands down your best bet for protecting your hair is wearing a hat. However, if you don’t have a hat or you don’t like wearing hats there are alternatives. Some of Woody’s favorite products right now are in the AVEDA Sun Care line: Protective Hair Veil ($26), Hair and Body Cleanser ($20) and After-Sun Hair Masque ($26). Each product works like an SPF for your hair and can be used on color treated or non-color treated hair. “It’s really going to protect your hair and keep it healthy so that it can prevent damage,” says Woody.
