What to Wear for a Weekend Away
By Megan McCarty

Leaving the skyline or suburbs behind for the Fourth of July weekend? Lucky you. But the more important question is: what are you going to wear? Here's how we, the indecisive over-packers, should decide what to bring for the weekend away.

Know your itinerary
Going to Leech Lake or the Boundary Waters? Where you’re going and what you’ll be doing will determine whether you should pack sneakers and work-out gear or a dress and heels. The trick is to pack a few items that go from daytime on the pontoon to a night by a bonfire. Pair one breezy sundress with casual sandals for lunch and then slip on metallic heels for dinner.

Checking the weather
In Minnesota you should be prepared for both frostbite and heat exhaustion at all times. Remember to pack both sweaters and swimwear in the same overnight bag.

Keep a color theme
That doesn’t mean roasting in black and beige; instead, pair bright colors and patterns with a neutral cardigan or jean jacket. Sticking to one or two color themes allows you to mix and match.

Pack top heavy
Pants can be re-worn (shh ? we won’t tell); tops often can’t, especially if you’ve been sweating in the sun all day. Pack more tops than bottoms if you insist on options. Consider the fabric of those pieces too. Linens, though lightweight, will wrinkle easily in the bottom of your bag, while cottons and denim are easy to pack and wear.

All about the details
Leave grandma’s vintage jewels in your jewelry box at home: One pair of earrings that go with everything, like an airy pair of silver chandeliers, will take you from Friday to Sunday. Keep those locks from going limp with a cool sunhat, and be sure not to forget sunglasses and your swimsuit too. You don¹t want to be the one stuck on shore.
