The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later
By Ellen Burkhardt

A lot can happen in ten years. Jobs change, people come and go, movements take foot. Exploring the effect of a decade, The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later focuses on how the murder of Matthew Shepard has impacted the town of Laramie, Wyoming.

On October 6, 1998, Matthew was beaten and left to die while tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie. He died six days later. His murder marked a historical moment in America that highlighted the violence and prejudice lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people face; it begun a movement in which the members of Tectonic Theater Project decided to participate in and broadcast with The Laramie Project. Debuting in 2000, the play has since been made into a film for HBO and seen by more than 50 million people around the country.

Joining over 120 theaters in all 50 states and seven countries, the Guthrie Theater will premiere the reading of The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later, an epilogue to the original play. Exploring how Matthew's murder has changed the town and continued to resonate with residents, the play includes new interviews as well as follow-up interviews with many of the individuals from the original piece.

A special talkback will follow the global reading, featuring creators, cast members, and other key individuals involved in the production. At www.laramieproject.org, participants will be able to blog, upload video and photos, and share stories about the play, as well as their experiences in preparing and presenting the epilogue in their communities.
