The old Hell’s Kitchen ain’t what it used to be. Subo (89 S. 10th St., Mpls; 612.886.2377) has taken over with a total revamp of the space, a spate of Filipino-inspired small dishes and fancy cocktails. Go for salty sweet combinations like the roasted “pork candy” with palm sugar and lime gastrique, or the poached octopus salad with a ginger vinaigrette.
If you’re within the delivery range of Lunch Cube, then you’re a bit spoiled—with sandwiches this good and free delivery, why would you ever choose to leave your desk? However, if you’re not within range or you just fancy an excuse to get out of the office, it’s now got a storefront (1122 Harmon Pl., Mpls; 612.225.6800) that offers walk-up, drive-up, dine-in or carry-out. The sandwich shop also has plans for more retail outlets in the skyway coming soon.
How about some quick, easy and cheap Italian for lunch? Vescio recently opened a trattoria in the skyway of the Six Quebec building (601 Marquette Ave., Mpls; 612.354.2374). It’s set up New York deli-style with stations of handmade pastas, flatbread and pizzas at a price point of $4-7. Dine-in and take-out options are available.
Koyi Sushi has left the Warehouse District and reemerged in the Seward neighborhood as Koyi Sushi Too (2111 E. Franklin Ave., Mpls; 612.353.3389). Now open for dinner only, it’s serving an expanded menu that includes some Thai dishes in addition to sushi and rolls.
We can stop pining over the loss of Auriga now – Doug Flicker just launched Piccolo (4300 Bryant Ave. S., Mpls; 612.827.8111). The dishes are classically Doug Flicker – homey, earthy, yet modern and surprising – like pickled pigs feet with scrambled eggs and truffle butter. Everything is offered in small, affordable portion sizes to encourage lots of sampling and sharing. Closed Tuesdays.
