1. Toast Try this cozy North Loop wine bar’s chocolate tart, a chocolate shell filled with dense chocolate filling and garnished with sea salt, olive oil and whipped cream. Other not-to-miss treats: layered lemon pound cake and cookies and milk. [415 N. First St., Mpls.; 612.333.4305]
2. Fresh Fields Bakery & Café We like to eat chocolate in immoral doses, which is why we frequent this friendly Stillwater café for its Baileys mousse cake. We’re talking three layers of chocolate infused with Bailey’s Irish Crème mousse and wrapped in chocolate ganache. Forget sinful. This stuff’s downright evil (in the most richly delicious way, of course). [1400 Frontage Rd. W., Stillwater; 651.351.1113]
3. Zeno Café is the quintessential meet-for-dessert spot, with a reasonably priced wine list and wall-to-wall windows revealing all the action at the busy intersection of Hennepin and Lagoon Avenues. It’s famous for its pineapple- and walnut-packed carrot cake, but the white raspberry chocolate bombe is no slouch, nor is the tableside-torched crème brulee. [2919 Hennepin Ave., Mpls.; 612.824.6300]
4. Mort’s Delicatessen High fives all around for Mort’s Delicatessen bringing classic deli nosh like pastrami on rye and matzo ball soup to Golden Valley. What’s more, the dessert case will stop you in your tracks. Slide into a spacious booth and order up a slice of mile-high carrot cake, Carnegie deli cheesecake or apple pie. [525 Winnetka Ave. N., Golden Valley; 763.544.2900]
5. 20.21 Housed in a glammed-out room, 20.21 at the Walker Art Center doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to closing the meal. The caramelized banana millefeuille is made with layers of chocolate wafer, banana custard and brown butter walnuts, while the ginger tempura fruits carries the Asian theme with assorted fresh fruits, honey yogurt sauce and soy butterscotch. [1750 Hennepin Ave., Mpls.; 612.253.3410]
