When You Just Need a Burger

Amateur pilots Hans Meyer of Burnsville and Mike Doherty of Le Sueur, Minn., just wanted to enjoy a nice winter day and maybe calm a craving for grilled ground beef in the meantime. Instead they were tracked down by Minneapolis park police last month, who informed the men that landing airplanes on city waterways—which they had just done, on Lake Calhoun—was, in fact, illegal. The two men were cited (up to $1,000 apiece—we hope those were some good burgers!) and allowed to go—once the FAA cleared them for takeoff. They have since been honored by Burger Jones, the aviators’ restaurant of choice, which recently added the “Mile High Club” burger to its menu and even set up a “legal defense fund” for the embattled pilots.
