"Winter Bridge" by Paul Crosby, one of the many fine works by local photographers available at viewville.com.
1. [deck the walls]
Viewville

There’s always room on the wall for more art, especially when it’s the work of a local artist. Now, thanks to Golden Valley-based photographer Michael Jensen, we don’t have to go to the gallery to get gallery-quality photography by Twin Cities artists. (Not that a trip to a gallery is ever a bad thing, of course. Hi gallery owners!) Viewville.com, Jensen’s new Web site, sells the best fine-art works by local commercial photographers at affordable prices—as low as $65!—with 50 percent going directly to the artists. The photos are all originals, printed on top-quality materials and shipped directly to your home, wall-ready. Now there’s no reason for those halls to go un-decked this month.

2. [rent-a-necklace]
Yours For The Day Jewelry Rental

Say you’re going to the opera and want to wear a $12,000 diamond necklace, but don’t want to shell out 12 big ones for a night of glam. Yours For The Day, a new jewelry rental company in downtown Minneapolis, will deck you out in bling for a fraction of the cost. That $12,000 sparkler? $460 for 24 hours. YFTD will even FedEx the bling directly to your mailbox.

3. [letterpress lives!]
2009 Desk Calendar by studio on fire

Plan your days in style with local letterpress printer Studio On Fire’s 2009 calendar, featuring psychedelic visuals from some of our favorite designers working today, including illustrator extraordinaire Clarimus and former Rhymesayer’s Entertainment art director Adam Garcia. Not only will the calendar substantially increase your work desk’s cool quotient, it might just cause that cute, artsy receptionist to acknowledge your existence this year. $30

4. [art book]
Unseen Mendieta

Her life may have been cut tragically short, but the unpublished work of celebrated Latin American artist Ana Mendieta—who fell to her death from a New York City apartment window in 1985—is now being remembered in a comprehensive new book ($75, Prestel) by Walker Art Center director Olga Viso. In Unseen Mendieta, Viso, an expert on Latin American contemporary art, chronicles the compelling legacy of the artist renowned for her body- and identity-oriented sculptures, photographs, film and performance art. prestel.com

5. [sister act]
Tin Star Sisters @ 331 Club

If there’s a Christmas tradition we can really get behind, it’s the annual return of the Tin Star Sisters, a real sister-duo so infectious they make us want to rush home and sign up for accordion, xylophone and/or tap-dancing lessons (their three primary instruments) every time we see them. The sisters moved out of Minnesota a couple years ago, drastically diminishing the Twin Cities music scene’s adorability. Don’t miss their holiday homecoming at the 331 Club in Minneapolis on Friday, Dec. 19 at 9 p.m.
