The three ceramic artists presenting at the Northern Clay Center reveal the versatility of their medium. The ceramic pieces created by the three women, Jane Gordon, Cynthia Levine and Roberta Massuch, could not be more different. Each of their creations channels different elements of form, color and even function, instilling each artists' pieces with a unique energy. Gordon favors installation work; her colorful, organic sculpted forms draw inspiration from the relationship between human beings and nature. Levine's creations are bold and formal, with emphasis on volume, space and containment.  Massuch, whose "Cowl" bowl is pictured here, presses together clay slabs to create points of tension within the soft forms of her pieces. What the three women have in common is that they were all awarded 2009 Jerome Grants in recognition of their promise as emerging ceramic artists.
