La Jetée: A Slideshow or a Sci-fi Mindblower?
By Chuck Terhark 2/08/10 4:14 PM

Film is a set images and sound shot through a projector at 24 or so frames per second, but what happens when you create an entire film from still images? Is it still a movie? Chris Marker’s La Jetée blurs the lines between slideshow and sci-fi mindblower. A postwar radical, Marker got his start as a documentary filmmaker, collaborating with the likes of Alain Resnais. Having your nonfiction films banned isn’t all that rewarding and Marker moved to a strange hybrid of the narrative and documentary formats. La Jetée went on to inspire Terry Gilliam’s 1995 cult classic 12 Monkeys. The 1962 classic makes its Event Horizon debut this Tuesday. The three-year showcase of the Walker’s postwar collection will have a rotating cast of flicks from the Ruben/Bentson Film and Video Study Collection.
