La Jetée blurs the lines between slideshow and sci-fi mindblower. A postwar radical, Marker got his start as a documentary filmmaker, collaborating with the likes of
Alain Resnais. Having your nonfiction films banned isn’t all that rewarding and Marker moved to a strange hybrid of the narrative and documentary formats. La Jetée went on to inspire Terry Gilliam’s 1995 cult classic
12 Monkeys. The 1962 classic makes its
Event Horizon debut this Tuesday. The three-year showcase of the Walker’s postwar collection will have a rotating cast of flicks from the Ruben/Bentson Film and Video Study Collection.
