Up and coming local screenprinter
Tonja Torgerson recently opened "Sick," a solo show at XY and Z Gallery. As the title implicates, the show explores the complexities of dealing with long-term illness. The show is autobiographical, featuring several full-size self portraits of the artist. The portraits document her struggles with a shifting identity and the anxieties that come with illness. Such a revealing look into the personal side of what has become a much-politicized issue makes "Sick" more than just beautiful prints - it is true food for thought. The accomplishment of "Sick" is just the latest addition to what is fast becoming Torgerson's impressive portfolio. The young artist, who studied at Perpich Center for the Arts and later the U of M, has shown works at the Soap Factory, Intermedia Arts as well as in galleries as far as Calgary, Michigan and New York.
