Penetrate Art's Surface at the Weisman
By Jamie Thomas 1/26/10 9:07 AM

Surface Quality examines the broad role of art's many "surfaces" by exploring such factors as material, depth and artist manipulation. From traditional surfaces of canvas, wood, bronze, ceramics to more unconventional surfaces, such as a canvas with holes punched in the material, "Surface Quality" seeks to redefine the often-overlooked surface of a work of art. By collecting different works from the Weisman collection and examining their different surfaces, the exhibit helps viewers see surface as more than just a two-dimensional, flat element of an artwork. Works by Andy Warhol and Lucio Fontana, as well as ancient sculpture will be displayed.
