With a lineup of some of the best Minnesota bands, young and old, The MN Beatle Project Vol. 1 features some great takes on The Beatles, for a good cause (100% of proceeds will be used to rebuild and enhance music and art education for children). The benefit CD, put together by The Current and Vega Productions, is centered on Jeremy Messersmith and Solid Gold’s Zach Coulter’s compelling cover of “Norwegian Wood." This downbeat, acoustically-driven take stretches the song out, buoyed by a rousing chorus. Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelle’s cover of “Sexy Sadie,” points to the maturation that could be seen on their recently released sophomore effort, Special Party Time For Everybody. Frontloaded with heavy hitters Mark Mallman, Romantica, The Suicide Commandos and Roma Di Luna, these artists have to be applauded for performing such a difficult task and doing it well. It really shows how strong the Twin Cities music scene has become in the past few years.

First Avenue will host The 30th Annual John Lennon Tribute tonight. So, why not head down to First and Seventh, pick up a CD and rock out to these Beatles classics.
