It’s tornado season, and so I jumped at the opportunity to go storm chasing with the Twister Sisters (for a future column). I met the chase team of Mel Metz, Peggy Willenberg, Brad Nelson and MaryLynn Nelson in Burnsville and we headed into Iowa to jump on some supercells that were moving toward Minnesota (and Minneapolis). This meant that when we were done chasing, we were only a few miles south of Owatonna and had a fairly short drive home. This also meant that we had time to uphold the storm chaser tradition of eating a steak dinner in celebration of actually seeing a tornado touch down. In hindsight, I’m not sure which one is more amazing, the fact that I actively sought out a tornado (and saw one) or the fact that I ate a big slab of red meat for the first time in years. Then again, when you see the video of our chase, complete with wicked rain, tornado sirens and driving toward a storm that everyone else was seeking shelter from, it’s pretty obvious which one is crazier.
Photo and video were taken by Melanie Metz. Stay tuned for the full chase story in a future METRO.
